From: Kevin the Drummer on 25 Jun 2010 16:41 I've tried to write an enhanced CD (audio first, then a data track). It doesn't work. Instead it stalls after writing the audio. Right now I'm running Mandriva 2010.0 on this machine with k3b-1.70.0-0.beta1.3.4mdv2010.0 to do the buring. The same hardware used to burn enhanced CDs just fine when I ran an earlier version of Mandriva with an unknown version of k3b. I have another machine running Mandriva 2007.0 and using version k3b-0.12.17-1mdv2007.0 of k3b. This system can burn the enhanced CD using all the same files from the system that doesn't work. Anyone know how to get this working again? For what it's worth, the log of the session attempt is below. Thanks.... It doesn't work. Instead it stalls after writing the I'll go ahead and post the solution - I'm confident I see the problem without having to verify via the "--version" outputs as I requested. The issue you have, as many other unsuspecting folks, has to do with the "cdrecord fork" which happened a number of years ago, but has lingered and is plaguing many users to this day. I have been a most-recent victim. In wanting to convert an avi file for use in a DVD format (i.e. so that it can be played in a DVD player), I ended up creating about 6 coffee coasters. And while doing research for other options (utils for format conversion), I came across some very valuable information at the "cdrtools" (cdrecord) website. I'm not going to regurgitate the information in this post, but will provide a link where you can read at your leisure: http://cdrecord.berlios.de/private/linux-dist.html Suffice it to say, I had this "broken fork" of cdrtools (better known as "cdrkit" or "wodim" - as many folks have on their system even to this day) installed on my current openSUSE 11.2 64bit system (it's the default package for openSUSE). I deleted the "cdrkit" package and its associated packages (and marked them as "taboo - never install") and then installed the "shily-cdrtools" packages. Guess what? The rip (avi->dvd conversion) went flawlessly the first and subsequent times and I've not had any other issues with the "cdrtools" utilities since - when using the "cdrkit" (buggy fork) utilities, I always had sporadic problems. I'm appalled that SUSE, and other distro vendors, knowing full well about this broken fork, who still includes the broken fork as the "default" !!! What you need to do is use your package manager to get rid of the "cdrkit" (wodim, genisoimage, and wodim-devel) packages. If you can, mark those packages as "never install" (openSUSE calls this "Taboo"). Next, install the *true* "cdrtools". If your package manager complains that tools such as "k3b" will be broken and should be removed, just respond, "no, keep k3b", because when you install the (correct) cdrtools, the dependencies will be satisfied. The image that follows shows my Yast package manager for the CD/DVD writing tools section should assist. Notice I've marked the 'cdrkit' utilities as "taboo" ... notice how all those tools have the same version #'s (1.1.9). And notice how all the "cdrtools" (i.e. cdrecord) have similar version #'s (3.00-1.2) http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/myswtest/cdr.png -- The United States is like the guy at the party who gives cocaine to everybody and still nobody likes him. -- Jim Samuels <<< Remove YOURSHOES to email me >>>

Maybe Mandriva has an optional repository where cdrtools is available? The worse-case scenario would be to download and build the sources: http://cdrecord.berlios.de -- Ban the bomb.
