There have been some reports, that after installing Windows Installer 4.5 (which is an optional update for Windows XP not beeing offered via Windows Update), some of these problems vanished as sudden, as they occured. No other error code. If true, you're most likely running a MUI version of Windows XP (not uncommon especially for preinstalled Windows XP Media Center Edition versions). Please try downloading and installing the *English* version of KB977165 for Windows XP then.
