Funny.. my pet peeve with Gnome it its always putting windows in the top
left corner. 10 years, devs won't do anything about it. If not for that I
would use Gnome.

That is the window manager, metacity not GNOME per se.

You can always run a different window manager under a GNOME session,
eg compiz, openbox, sawfish etc.
