I'm experiencing the exact same problem, also using 2009a on WinXP.
??? Error using ==> loadfonts
Could not dynamically load fonts.

I've never had this problem though until I installed MikTex 2.8. Uninstalling/reinstalling both MikTex or Matlab didn't solve the problem.

Would appreciate any help on this.
