I'm trying to print to a LJ4+ with both X.4 and later, X.6.

I found the HP driver package, installed it, set the static IP,
and got nowhere....

The printer panel gives me a W2 Protocol error.....

Should this combination work?

BTW, Ethertalk is enabled on the JetDirect card, but the printer
does not appear via that route.

I don't remember whether this specific model supports PostScript.
If it does, then it should be possible to get things working.

OS-X nowadays supports AppleTalk via TCP/IP only. This printer does use
AppleTalk as such. Therefore you are out of luck with that route.
Try printing via TCP/IP to port 9100.

No, but I thought the later drivers incorporated Ghostscript...

The EIO card has the option to enable Ethertalk. In my
experience, the printer won't appear on the machine unless it is
is willing to use it, a defence against cluesless users.

[BTW, this EIO card actually HAS a Localnet port as well as the
UTP Ethernet...as if I had anything to drive it with...]

This is another reason why the Mac only commands 4% world market share.

Because current versions of Mac OS don't support sixteen-year-old
printers?
