Password data is encrypted locally (256 bit AES) before it is uploaded to the LastPass server. You're not really trusting them. The password data can also be exported, so if the service is ever discontinued you don't lose everything. Regarding password managers built into browsers LastPass argues they are insecure. I don't know enough to have an opinion about it, but if that's true your passwords are less safe on your own computer then on the LastPass server. I used KeePass before LastPass and I think KeePass is great. I just prefer the simplicity and convenience of having the passwords synchronized across all my computers and browsers. Accomplishing this with KeePass required some "sneaknet" (so to speak). In any case, you can easily export from LastPass to KeePass so you can fall back on it if necessary.

On Tuesday Kevin sang the praises of LastPass for password management, but a lot of readers are still in love with KeePass and aren't ready to trust their passwords with a third-party service, no matter how secure. Unfortunately, despite some solid plug-ins, KeePass's browser integration isn't close to as tight as LastPass's. That's where KeeFox comes in. http://keefox.org/ -- Ninou Gratilog, le catalogue des logiciels gratuits http://www.gratilog.net/
