Not really, no. I've used it in the past as a quick way to back up data.
I use rsync so much now that I simply overlooked tar.

I'm no expert on Linux/BSD backups, but the few GUI progs [and it was a
while ago] that I have tried sucked so bad they could have made Bearware. I
'discovered' tar, and it works for me. Granted my needs aren't great on
these platforms.
