True.... :-) >If you don't trust the (installation of) FreeBSD boot manager, you can >always set up the Windows boot manager to boot FreeBSD: It's more that I don't trust myself. I'm still not clear on exactly HOW to install the FreeBSD boot manager. I THOUGHT I did that during the install---but it ended up on the USB drive, not the internal drive, which the system boots to. I read one article that said that if you're booting off of the same drive as Windows, copy /boot/boot1 to that drive, but if you're booting off of another drive, copy /boot/boot0. Then, right below that, it says NOT to copy boot0---says that would make the system unbootable, and that it has to be installed by sysinstall (which it was...just not in the right place). >http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/faq/disks.html#NT-BOOTLOADER > >A bit more work, but after that it works. Shortly after I posted my previous bit, I realized I forgot to ask about one other possibility: booting from the boot disk from the distro, and starting FreeBSD on the USB drive from there. I think I remember seeing a post in this thread giving me the exact command to use, too...gotta go back and re-read, now that I've had some coffee, habanero (and breakfast to go with the habs), and benadryl to clear my sinuses so I can breathe. It really helps me think more clearly if I can breathe. :-) Thanks, --jim -- 73 DE N5IAL (/4) MiSTie #49997 < Running FreeBSD 7.0 > spooky130u(a)NOSPAM.gmail.com ICBM/Hurricane: 30.39735N 86.60439W Do not look into laser with remaining eye!

I missed that before...I'll try it. Thanks. I tried "tunefs -L USBROOT da0s1a" and then, at mountroot> prompt, "ufs:/dev/da0s1a" ... still can't find root. Note that at the Fixit: prompt from the live CD or DVD, I can mount /dev/da0s1a on /mnt and see that it is the root filesystem created during the install. On to the next attempt.... EasyBCD. I just checked, and it seems to only work as a boot manager for dual-boot between windows vista and [whatever], and they specifically state that the boot manager in vista is different, and so on. How would I boot directly from the distribution's DVD (e.g., from the Fixit shell prompt)? I've forgotten (and I'm not sure I even CAN do this).... Yes, this is possible. I wrote a quick tip about it here: http://geekinfo.net/article.php?story=20070107031455259 -- Torfinn Ingolfsen, Norway
