Thanks to David Empson for all the good advice appended below.

Original problem was a bit of spilled coffee creating an intermittent
stuck key on a single-user Leopard MacBook Pro. The Pro could still be
operated some of the time from an external USB keyboard and mouse --
until the "X" key would suddenly begin emitting an endless string of
keystrokes.

Simplest temporary fix turned out to be creating a new account for the
Pro's owner on an available Tiger MacBook that was already loaded with
more or less the same suite of apps; restarting the Pro in Target Disk
mode; connecting it to the Tiger MacBook; and finding and copying over
form the Pro to the Tiger MacBook the user's immediately needed data
files (e.g., the Pro user's Eudora Folder and settings, which worked
fine once copied over to the Tiger MacBook).

More sophisticated solutions weren't needed, so weren't tried.
