From: Dell Christopher on 22 May 2010 18:03 20" iMac, OS X I know my way around a Windows PC, but a friend with this iMac is having the following problem: When she turns on the iMac, the login box comes up. Her user name is already there but every time she tries to input her password, nothing happens. Even though the cursor is in the password box, no typed characters are recognized. As soon as she types the first character, the box then fades into the background (i.e. no longer the dominant screen). We tried new batteries in the keyboard, but still nothing. I really can't figure this out, but I'm hoping someone with Mac OS expertise might offer some guidance. All feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

All feedback is appreciated. try a wired usb keyboard, not bluetooth, and see if that makes a difference.

With a wireless keyboard, certain parts of the operating system may have to work before the keyboard is recognized. Even with a wired keyboard, You might have a problem. I once connected to my computer through a USB PCI card. That keyboard was not recognized. I had to use one of the built-in USB ports. Once the system was going, I could plug into the USB card. I don't know enough about iMacs but I think you cannot use expansion UBS cards. If your mouse actually moves a cursor before login, select the desired user with the mouse even if there is one user. Another possibility is to have automatic log-in for a dummy user with almost no privileges. I think it also possible to write an AppleScript to automatically log-in and then log-out again. Then, with the system running, the keyboard would be recognized. Bill -- An old man would be better off never having been born.

This may be ridiculous, but some Macs are delvered with the password blank. Perhaps the blank is the password. Also, look in system preferences and set up the keboard as per above.
