If I logout, change windows managers and log back in it won't come up
all the way. If I log out again and go back to the original WM it won't
come back up all the way either. No icons or desktop, just a background.
I have to reboot to get it back up. This is nuts.

Actually if you read the Startup sound thread the answer to your problem
is in there. It is a bug in metacity.
