If you are going to lock things, be they computers, automobiles, your home, etc. it's a very good idea to be sure you know where the key is. It's customary to ship two keys with a lock. So you put one on your key ring and the other in some safe place. If you lose your keys, at least you have a backup. In the case of keys for computers, a keybox in the data center is a very good idea. You keep track of ONE key, the key to the keybox. The keys to the computers are either in your hand, in the lock, or in the keybox.

I used a paper-clip, and it only took about 10 minutes to get it to turn round - I think it was just one click to the right I needed it. It was years ago, but I remember it being pretty easy - not really lock picking as such. I found a picture of the key on the web, and then bent the paper clip so it roughly matched the outline of the key and twiddled it about a bit while turning the lock "slot" with a pair of pliers. When in finally went, I felt like MacGyver :) -Mark

Another thing you can do is call around to other Sun shops. Any data center that has a significant number of Sun servers around probably has dozens of those keys laying around.

The thing is, they seem to disappear, never to be seen again (for those datacenters that have lots of Sun gear lying around). Its sort of the same as CageNuts. I have to keep buying them about once a year. I don't know where they go, but I keep running out...
