Hi all,

do you run Slackware on any such device? I'm looking for a box which
can run Apache, maybe a smtp server and little more. I will install
packages from Slackware groups "a" and "n", and nothing else.
I need an ethernet port, bootable CF card, 64 to 256 MB RAM.
Also welcome, but not mandatory, bootable USB port, PXE boot, second
ethernet port.

I've been very happy so far with Soekris Engineering net4501
(http://www.soekris.com/net4501.htm). It's worked with Slackware out
of the box, without any patching or other pains in the neck, since
Slackware 11, or maybe even 10-something. It died on me after more
than five years of uninterrupted use.

Any slackware experience on other such gizmos?

I've been eyeing up the new FitPC2i, looks like all the hardware should
work fine. They're not taking new orders ATM, but should be soon (according
to the website).

Norhtec also has a VIA-based box (Microclient Sr), they may swap you your Jr
for a Sr?

As far as I can see, it's just a ULV 500MHz C7, probably a stock VIA nanoITX
board. Any Linux should work on it.

The SheevaPlug comes close, but isn't quite there yet (if only
because it has only 1 ethernet port). However, the GuruPlugs
from the same company (GlobalScale) should be available early
next month, and assuming they work as well as the SheevaPlug
(I have one of those), I think they'll fit the bill perfectly.

Does an Asus EeePC count? It isn't fanless, though the fan it does
have is VERY quiet. Other than that, SSD, SD card, multiple USB ports,
wired or wireless (802.11b/g) networking, local keyboard and display,
and a much more current CPU than the Soekris device you pointed to,
in a package that looks to be about the same size as the Soekris,
with a built-in UPS (ie. the netbook's battery).

I think the EeePC surpasses your specification, if that's any help ...

Nope, way too big and expensive. I have no use for a screen or a
keyboard.

Thanks
