And it doesn't really matter because the sliding switch on an SD card is
not electrically connected to the card memory. So if a device chooses to
write to the card (either deliberately or because of a bug) there is
nothing much you can do.

It's certainly easy. Once installed it transparently removes hidden Mac files
and folders from any non-Mac formatted disks that are opened. It completely
solves the problem with my Garmin unit so for me it's well worth the fairly
modest cost.
