The system log is at /var/log/system.log and will usually give you an indication as to what is causing startup and low-level issues, where the console log typically shows only issues you experience after you are logged into your user account. Feel free to post *relevant portions* (entries that are time stamped around the time of the occurrence, for instance) of the logs here if you need help understanding them. What am I looking for? something related to why it's shutting down, but my bet is on the battery. take it to a store and let apple run their diagnostics and test it with a new battery. you can try a simpler version of the diagnostics by booting the system dvd and holding down the 'd' key.

Thanks. Are your fans on a lot? Not at all? Your temp. gage is borked. After doing almost anything, the CPU will be well above 100 in my experience. You may be running too hot, and that could be the cause of shutting down. Also, do you generally run a lot of apps at once? Have you done a power manager reset? IIRC, battery out, hold down power button until it dings. I'd suggest you look at the Apple page on that rather than rely on my memory. -- john mcwilliams
