Dear all,

this is a problem that may appear very simple, but it may have hundreds
of possible causes, I believe - and I couldn't yet resolve it: my
MacBook Pro (13", current model - 2.53 GHz) shuts down after a while of
standing idle, no matter if connected to the power supply or the
battery only (the latter I would understand). I have changed the
settings in energy to never shut down while connected to the power
supply, of course - still, it doesn't help. This problem appears both
at the university (where I leave it in the office for hours sometimes,
while I'm in the lab), as well as at home - first I thought it might be
due to some hack from somebody in the uni's network, but I setup the
firewall, and, as said, it happens at home, too - where it is only
connected to my personal WiFi (WEP2-secured). Well, You may see that I
have considered lots of possible causes - still, I can't see the
reason. This is extremely annoying, since everytime the auto shut down
is invoked, all my running software is closed, and I have to restart
everything and set it up to be able to work (quite a lot to do for it!
annoying!). I usually only restart the system every two weeks or so.
Let me just say that it seems to be a software-invoked shutdown,
because some softwares can interrupt it (such as VMware Fusion, or some
other applications with unsaved changes, e.g. Skim) - however, this
does NOT prevent shutdown of other softwares (and still, I have to open
and arrange them/the workspaces in them again). I have secured my
account with FileVault; could this shutdown be due to FileVault (to
automatically free some space on the drive)? Or, could it be due to my
change in the sleepmode settings (I enabled hibernation=safe sleep,
because I don't like the ordinary Apple sleep mode, which drowns the
battery).

Thank You for considerations! Would be nice if somebody could clarify
this for me!! Best regards,
Bjrn

Try the normal sleep "that drains the battery" and see if it ever
happens again.

See if the following helps. I do not remembe how I found it. It might
have been a post here.

Thank You very much for Your input! My MacBook is one of the most
recent series of MacBook Pros, still the current sreies (though it
might change soon...), 2.53 Ghz, 13 "... Your article is about a much
older version of PowerBooks... and the description (non-responsive deep
sleep) does not fit to my problems. I have a computer which - without
obvious reasons (at least none obvious to me...) - would log off and
shut down (complete system shutdown!) after a certain time (somewhere
between 30 and 60 min., I estimate) of non-use... as said, everything
in the system that I know of is set not to stop, sleep or halt the
notebook in any way when the power supply is connected and plugged into
the wall outlet (what I usually use...)... still - it happens all the
time...

Dorayme - thank You, too! I have set the computer to go into normal
sleep mode now, and will see what happens (today I used it so
intensively - I couldn't really test it...). However, I don't really
see the connection (since I do not completely understand why setting
the notebook to go to deep sleep (hibernate) when the lid is closed
could be connected to the unexpected shutdown when the computer is not
in use, but simply left standing open and connected to wall electricity
output). I'll tell what I see...

Thanks! Best,
Bjrn
