From: Michael Narciso on 13 Mar 2010 22:58 Hello All, So as most of us know, the new Core i5/Core i7 MacBook Pro could be just around the corner. I'm debating if I should keep my now almost 3 year old 15" Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (non-unibody) and stick an Intel X25 SSD in it for under $500 or get a new upcoming MBP. One of the things that I am noticing is how slow it is to boot and load applications. I never use to notice how "slow" things were until I was using my girlfriend's current generation 13" MacBook Pro. Things definitely feel snappier and I'm not sure if it's a combination of a better processor and better components. Not sure if that is worth another $2k more for an upgrade. I'm willing to spend $2k+ for an upgrade but I won't unless I have to. My hopes are that an Intel X-25 SSD will help my system feel that much more snappier. Anyone have one of these installed in their system?

At this point in time, I would wait a couple of months to see what Apple comes up with and then compare with real facts instead of speculating on what Apple will do for its next laptop models. Peripherals and connectors will likely dictate whether you should upgrade your older one or buy the new one.

If not, then it might not arrive until after the iPad hits the stores. > I'm debating if I should keep my now almost 3 > year old 15" Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (non-unibody) and stick an > Intel X25 SSD in it for under $500 or get a new upcoming MBP.... I can only tell you what I plan to do. I have 15" & 17" MBP's. The 15 is older and is feeling kind of poky, and one of the USB ports is physically broken. I could scavenge a USB connector from one of the old G4 PowerBooks I have lying around, but that wouldn't speed the machine. I'm going to buy a new one -- maybe a second 17" -- as soon as they are announced. Some rumors say the new MBP's will be released Tuesday. It will certainly be very soon; I think it would have happened already if Apple had not been preoccupied with releasing the iPad -- one of which I have ordered for my wife :) Davoud -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

They were up for a good day or two so something is definitely on it's way. > >> I'm debating if I should keep my now almost 3 >> year old 15" Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (non-unibody) and stick an >> Intel X25 SSD in it for under $500 or get a new upcoming MBP.... > > I can only tell you what I plan to do. It's a little beat up from some normal wear. The only thing that's major is that the super drive sometimes doesn't read certain media. Is your current 17" a unibody? I also bought a couple iPads. Perhaps only because I have an itchy Add to Cart finger.

That and what you wrote in your OP: "...how slow it is to boot and load applications. I never use to notice how "slow" things were until I was using my girlfriend's current generation 13" MacBook Pro." > Is your current 17" a unibody? The last before that one. It still feels fine to me, but my wife, who has a new quad-core iMac w. 8 GB of RAM, 2 TB drive, and all, says she doesn't see how I can stand to use it! > I also bought a couple iPads. Perhaps only because I have an itchy Add > to Cart finger. OK, that settles it. Why didn't you say so sooner -- you and I are among the lucky ones who can afford to drop a few k$ for the odd luxury. Stop agonizing, buy the new MB Pro, and never, ever, look back.
