I've had this minor problem with MacOS X ever since the start: every now
and then, it'll lose track of some application icons.

It seems to happen at random, and fix itself randomly but only after
rebooting.

Back in the old days, I knew how it worked and knew to rebuild the
desktop if this happened.

What's going on these days? How come the icons get lost, and is there
anything I should be doing about it? Is this a sign of some systemic
problem that's going to get worse until the whole thing comes crashing
down around my ears, or what?

Cheers,
Rowland.

I get this occasionally, only since Snow Leopard or thereabouts though.
For me the icons are completely transparent, I assume that's what you
mean. You can rebuild the launchservices database with this command to
fix it:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/
LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain
local -domain system -domain user

No, I mean that the OS can't find the icon image and displays instead an
odd icon made up of a white outlined red pair of characters, thus:

!?

(under 10.6, forget what it did under 10.4).

The app gets launched perfectly okay - so the LS database can't be the
problem with this AFAICT.

btw, your suggestion fails to rebuild the LS database correctly if
you've got apps on discs other than your boot disc - you need to tell it
to look on all discs if you're in that position. It was an error
included in all the GUI apps of a few years back that claimed to rebuilt
the ls database.

MainMenu's author fixed it pronto - then the app got taken over by some
money-grubbing bastards by the look of it...

No, I don't have a good idea of what the correct incantation to rebuild
the LS database would be if you've got lots of discs, although I did
work out one that seemed to work okay for me but I think it's iffy so
I'm not digging it out now. Not unless you really want me to.

Rowland.
