I think I started using it at about the same time. I got started on
Usenet in 1994, and desperately needed an offline reader at the time.
Not only was it a slow dialup connection - 2400 baud as I recall - I
had a limit of 2 hours connection time per day. I may have even had just
a single phone line at the time, I can't recall.

I started with an app called NewsHopper:

I kept using it for several years, but the author ceased development a
few years later and I had to give up on the last version when it
couldn't post followups under some circumstances. That's when I started
using MacSOUP.

NewHopper had one feature I really miss - its filter let you highlight
tagged messages by color (see figure 22.19 in the above page). Stefan
once told me he was eventually planning to do that for MacSOUP, but... I
currently couldn't stand to lose MacSOUP's graphical thread display,
though.

Ditto, although the offline capability does come in handy for me
occasionally. There are occasions when I'll spend considerable time
trying to come up with a solution to someone's problem, perhaps going
through several reboots, and it's really easy to tag the post and go
right back to it later.

I use MacSOUP too even though it does have its shortcomings. I think it
should be fully rewritten in order to take full advantage of the new
features offered by the OS and other developments.

That includes full unicode support and full support of Services. With
the MacOS X' built-in spell-checker.

At present you cannot use chars not present in MacRoman and mistypings
aren't marked.

Nevertheless, the application's tree view when reading a node is second
to none.
