From: TaliesinSoft on 17 Mar 2010 18:32 If I send a mail to a number of recipients (including myself) only the names of the recipients appear in the To list. Placing the cursor over one of those names will cause the actual email address to be displayed. When the mail is sent some of the recipients appear as they did when the mail was sent and some appear with the name followed by the email address. Is there anything that can be done so that just the names and not the email addresses appear when the mail is received? -- James Leo Ryan --- Austin, Texas --- taliesinsoft(a)me.com

Examine the source and you should be able to work out the difference. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts. JR

An example is a message addressed to fourteen different persons, one of them being myself. The addresses are kept in a Distribution List maintained within the Address Book. Each of the entries in the Distribution List includes just three items, a First Name, a Last Name, and an email address. When I address a letter to the Distribution List just the First Name and Last Name appear. When I then open the message sent to me some of the entries show just the First Name and Last Name and others also show the email address. If there is something else I should be looking at I'd be most interested. -- James Leo Ryan --- Austin, Texas --- taliesinsoft(a)me.com

I'll bet those people have multiple addreses (e.g. home and work) in the address book. It displays the address so you can tell which of them was used. If you uncheck "Use Smart Addresses" in Preferences->Viewing, the address will be shown for all recipients. I don't think there's a way to make it never show the addresses. -- Barry Margolin, barmar(a)alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me *** *** PLEASE don't copy me on replies, I'll read them in the group ***

As I stated above, each of the address book entries contains only a single email address (which happens to be titled "work") for each person in the Distribution List. > If you uncheck "Use Smart Addresses" in Preferences->Viewing, the > address will be shown for all recipients. My preferences is to have "Use Smart Addresses" remain checked. So the question still remains as to why some of the entries are displayed with both name and address? -- James Leo Ryan --- Austin, Texas --- taliesinsoft(a)me.com |
