sql 2005 dedicated distributor

We replicate all tables to a backup server via trans repl, we also have
merge repl between pub & order entry subs. ONly the publisher is replicating
to the backup server, idea is when pub fails the backup should take over.

Problem, cannot get merge replicating between backup (new pub) and merge
subscribers w/out full reinit. Not good. I would like to test mirroring, can
we mirror to backup, at failover have the mirror take over the name of the
failed publisher, then start the merge agents and expect data to replicate
between backup and merge subscribers. anyone test this? or use this as a
solution?
