From: Amit on 29 Sep 2006 23:10 Thanks GreenieLeBrun and antioch for your replies. I appreciate your help very much. As advised, I disabled AV and disconnected from the net before the installation. I tried both ways. 1) downloading full file to hard drive and then install 2) installing from Microsoft website with web interface. In both cases it failed to install with the same errors. "An internal error occurred." "Service Pack 2 installation did not complete." I am pasting part of the log svcpack.log I will greatly appreciate your help to solve this problem. 124.453: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 124.578: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 124.953: Failed to open c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB919007\update\updatebr.inf 124.953: Failed to open c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB920685\update\updatebr.inf 193.921: AnalyzePhaseTwo used 68953 ticks 193.921: AnalyzePhaseThree used 0 ticks 193.921: AnalyzePhaseTwo used 0 ticks 193.921: AnalyzePhaseThree used 0 ticks 193.921: AnalyzePhaseFive used 0 ticks 195.437: AnalyzePhaseSix used 1516 ticks 196.312: Trying CheckVLKForBlock again 197.562: Error: CheckVLKForBlock failed 197.578: Inventory complete: ReturnStatus=536741199, 178282 ticks 197.578: Num Ticks for invent : 178282 202.812: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2 202.812: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery. 202.843: An internal error occurred. 212.593: Message displayed to the user: An internal error occurred. 212.593: User Input: OK 212.593: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. 214.187: Message displayed to the user: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. 214.187: User Input: OK 214.187: Update.exe extended error code = 0x1ffe054f Thanks, Amit

And so will Mow - hope he is still following this one. It does not hold out much hope for the upgrade I hope to be doing on my neighbours system this weekend. I did find a 'favourites' last night, that I had put to one side some months ago - there could be a solution in there - http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Update.exe+extended+error+code+%3D+0x1ffe054f&btnG=Google+Search&meta= Quote:- "It looks to me that the installation have some problems with obtaining the ProductID for the computer (if this is fatal or not for the installation I don't know). " The log you posted I think is missing the last line - something like this - don't know if it makes any difference to the info as a whole - "Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action compliance. " With any luck Mow or another may be able to read something out of these various links - it I am afraid it is beyond my knowledge - I am just collating all the various ways and means so far employed to get SP2 loaded. I think that MS provide an initial free troubleshoot by phone for this type of problem. http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=1&gprid=6527 To Mow If the OP has not got WGA/WGAN downloaded, would that make any difference???? with reference to the Prod ID issue mentioned above. In the meantime, I think I will delay my attempt with SP2. Rgds Antioch

You could try activating the SP2 verbose logging to supplement it or use FileMon instead. E.g. FileMon filtering on just the package name would show you all the file accesses it would be trying, including the writes to its log. Hence you would have an interleaved record of file accesses associated with each log message. Presumably FileMon + verbose logging would provide that much greater level of interleaving. > > I will greatly appreciate your help to solve this problem.
