Friend has a G3 iBook (600mhz or 700mhz) and wants to buy a second-hand
iPhone (1st Gen) - will he be able to manage it on that? (He also has an
iLamp, but it's - to use his words - a bit 'flakey')

Absolute minimum requirement is that the computer must be running iTunes
7.3 or later for an original iPhone. That version will run on Mac OS X
10.3.9. You should also be able to use an iPhone 3G (not 3GS) with Mac
OS X 10.3.9 and iTunes 7.7 or 7.7.1.

If the computer was running Mac OS X 10.4.11 it could run the current
version of iTunes (9.1) and use an iPhone 3GS, but not an iPad (which
requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later, and that won't run on an iBook G3).

That's great - thanks.

If memory serves I think he's on Tiger, so all should be fine.
