Uh! IMHO all programs listed are essential... by my side! I use them
every day. Without any competitor... ;-)

There is only one direct freeware competitor and my reply to my own post
lists it: ZSoft Uninstaller.

If you can find another FREEWARE program that monitors program
installations, I'm all ears.

These lists were supposed to be from the perspective of the person who
posts them. There is absolutely *no way* you can know what my needs are
regarding the features a program offers and which makes them
indispensable to me.

By the way, I'm still waiting for you to post *your* list.

Some of those you listed are not "essential" apps because they have
good freeware alternatives.

ZipInstaller (installs zip archives)
nLite (XP service pack/updates/driver slipstreamer)
vLite (Vista service pack/updates/driver slipstreamer)
AMP Font Viewer (displays specified words in every font at once)
WinPatrol (application modification watchdog)
NewsProxy (newsgroup killfile plugin)
AviDemux (video converter, slicer, multiplexer/demultiplexer)
Audacity (audio editor that accepts most video file inputs)
AviSynth (programmable video editor)
DVD Shrink (resizes DVDs without reencoding)
Color Correction Wizard (copies color gamut from one pic to another)
ShiftN (corrects perspective distortion)
Wink (interactive tutorial creator)
VOB2MPG (converts vobset to single mpeg2 file)
UltimateBootCD4Windows (creates custom bootable rescue USB/CD)

All of them perform an essential function for me and either have no
direct competition or perform their tasks uniquely.

For the person posting the list, not *you*. Or don't you understand that?

> Some of those you listed are not "essential" apps because they have
> good freeware alternatives.

Maybe in _your_ estimation, but not in _mine_. The original question was
(emphasis added by me), "Which of _your_ Freeware programs would _you_
miss the most? Which programs are _you_ the most attached to or
dependent on? Which have no real good Freeware alternatives, and its
disappearance would change the way _you_ work, or force _you_ to go
commercial?"

In other words, the replies in this thread by their very nature will be
purely subjective. You seem to understand that below at the bottom of
your list, but be unwilling to allow others to post subjective material.

Note the phrase "for me" which YOU used. The same applies regarding *my*
list and *myself*. The features you list after each program are
important to *you* and may or may not be important to others.

> and either have nodirect competition or perform their tasks uniquely.

Going through this thread and effectively telling everybody that they
don't have unique freeware feature needs as you have done is insulting,
arrogant and obsessive.
