I forgot to mention that this also requires the battery extender have a
propietary adapter so it can actually connect to the iPod.

Oh yes, where would you suggest I put it? Hold it in my lap for the entire trip
or perhaps my hand? The seat pocket in front of me is inconvenient due to
people getting in and out (I sit in the aisle). The flights are almost
always full or close to full, so not the seat next to me either.

There are also *lots* of USB mini extenders on the market, which can
charge more than a single proprietary device.

No, I didn't. Even if I did, I can't sync up where my audio book is between
the two.

If it's not usable when I need it most, then it's useless.

No, they can't

They have a mini usb male plug, to go into the device.
