Sobell, Author of Various Unix/Linux Books, Sobell Associates Inc. ------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION: ------------- Over the years, Unigroup has been raffling off review copies of various big and comprehensive Unix/Linux-related Books published by Addison Wesley/Prentice Hall... and many of them were authored by our July 2010 speaker... Mark Sobell. We are pleased to be able to have Mark present at Unigroup this month. Mark will be presenting a double topic, on BASH, and on UPSTART. (We can partition the available meeting time depending on audience topic preferences). ------------------------------------------------------------------- SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: --------------------- To REGISTER for this event, please RSVP by using the Unigroup Registration Page: http://www.unigroup.org/unigroup-rsvp.html This will allow us to automate the registration process. (Registration will also add you to our mailing list.) Please avoid Emailed RSVPs. Please continue to check the Unigroup web site and meeting page, for any last minute updates concerning this meeting. If you registered for this meeting, please check your Email for any last minute announcements as the meeting approaches. Also make sure any anti-spam white-lists are updated to _ALLOW_ Unigroup traffic! If you block Unigroup Emails, your address will be dropped from our mailing list. Also, if you have an interest in Unigroup, be sure to receive Unigroup information DIRECTLY from Unigroup, via direct receipt of Emails and by visiting the Unigroup Web Site. NO OTHER SOURCE provides timely, accurate and complete Unigroup information. Please RSVP as soon as possible, preferably at least 2-3 days prior to the meeting date, so we can plan the food order. RSVP deadline is usually the night before the meeting day. Note: RSVP is requested for this location to make sure the guard will let you into the building. RSVP also helps us to properly plan the meeting (food, drinks, handouts, seating, etc.) and speed up your sign-in at the meeting. If you forget to RSVP prior to the meeting day, you may still be able to show up and attend our meeting, however, we cannot guarantee what building security will do if you are "not on the list". ------------------------------------------------------------------- MAIN PRESENTATION ----------------- Topic: BASH Shell Programming and The Ubuntu UPSTART Init Daemon Introduction: ------------- Upstart Because the traditional System V init daemon (SysVinit) does not deal well with modern hardware, including hotplug devices, USB hard and flash drives, and network-mounted filesystems, Ubuntu replaced it with the Upstart init daemon. The runlevel-based SysVinit daemon uses runlevels (recovery/single-user, multi-user, and more) and links from the /etc/rc?.d directories to the init scripts in /etc/init.d to start and stop system services. The event-based Upstart init daemon uses events to start and stop system services. bash The bash (Bourne-Again) Shell is based on Bourne Shell and has many enhancements drawn from the Korn and C Shells. It was developed by the GNU Project and is widely used on UNIX-like systems. It is useful both as an interactive shell and a high-level programming language. Detailed Outline: ----------------- The Upstart init daemon - Definition of terms - Runlevel emulation - initctl - Jobs - Events - Job definition files Writing bash Shell Scripts - Quoting Mechanisms - Positional (Command Line) Parameters - File Descriptors - Redirecting Standard Output and Standard Error - Using exec to Redirect I/O - Command Substitution - Menus - Array variables - Functions References & Web Resources: --------------------------- To-be-announced. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker Biography: ------------------ Mark G. Sobell, author of many best-selling books, including A Practical Guide to the UNIX System, UNIX System V: A Practical Guide, A Practical Guide to Solaris, and A Practical Guide to Linux, (all from Addison Wesley), as well as A Practical Guide to Red Hat Linux, Fifth Edition, A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, Second Edition, and A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux, Third Edition (available shortly) (all from Prentice Hall), and has more than twenty-five years of experience working with UNIX and Linux. Mark is the president of Sobell Associates Inc., a consulting firm that designs and builds custom software applications for UNIX and Linux systems and provides training and support. Mr. Sobell started working with computers part time after high-school where he worked on the Dartmouth Time-sharing system where they developed the BASIC programming language and on IBM OS/360 systems. He started writing when he worked for microcomputer company Cromemco in the late 1970's. He published his first book (A Practical Guide to UNIX) in 1982 and started Sobell Associates in 1984. He has been writing and consulting ever since. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Company Biography: ------------------ (see above) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Giveaways: ---------- Addison-Wesley Professional/Prentice Hall PTR, and O'Reilly have been kind enough to provide us with review copies of some of their books, which we will continue to raffle off as giveaways at our meetings. The publishers always ask that the persons receiving the books provide a review and/or feedback about their books. Unigroup would like to thank both companies for the support provided by their User Group programs. As always, all of the books will be available for review at the start of the meeting. We have some Solaris Related CD-ROMs from our friends at the local NYC Sun Microsystems Office. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Fee Schedule: ------------- Unigroup is a Professional Technical Organization and User Group, and its members pay a yearly membership fee.
