Hello folks!

I guess I have discovered a strange bug in Mac OS X 10.5.8 which causes
all SSL connections to fail if (a) parental controls (in system
Preferences) are active (b) web content filter in there is switched off
(!) and (c) if there is an additional entry for the loopback device in
/etc/hosts, e.g. to block spyware.

So, I you'd like to try it out, do the following:

1. Check as many SSL of your choice if they work.
This could be an Amazon, EBay or GMail login website (check the address
URL starts with "https:" in the URL field!) or other software using SSL,
such as Tweetie.

2. Edit "/etc/hosts" by adding a line like

127.0.0.1 ssl.test

at the end of the file.

This would usually be done to block access to the site "ssl.test" which
cannot be done otherwise, for example if some software is known to
"phone home" to that site.

You will need admin privileges to edit that file.
If you don't know how to to that, don't do it!

3. SAVE the edited file!

4. Activate parental controls for your account in System Preferences.
You may need admin credentials for that, too.
Make sure Web content filtering / restrictions is off.

5. Quit and restart Safari (or your browser or other software you useded
in step 1) and check your SSL connections again.

6. Post your results here, please!

7. Repair your system by switching off Parental Controls and deleting
the additional line in "/etc/hosts".
