The Brother 2030 is listed as being version 1.40

You haven't understood that question 1 & 2 were mutually exclusive options.

You explained that it connects with a USB cable. Question (2) about network
protocol and IP address is therefore irrelevant.

So, what happens when you connect the printer to the old G5? Naturally you
will have to re-install the driver, but this would help confirm that the
printer itself is not faulty.

Also, does any other USB device work when connected to the new iMac? This
would help confirm that there is no problem with the USB connector on the
iMac

Beware that it is possible to push a USB plug into a RJ45 socket, so it may
be that you actually never connected the printer to the iMac at all !!

Yes it does, with status "Idle"

You might some joy if you point your Mac's web browser at
<http://localhost:631/>, which is the web interface to the underlying
printing system called CUPS. There's stuff you can do in there that's
awkward or not possible in the normal printing GUIs.

It will, for a start tell you if the printer is accepting jobs - not
always the case.
