This lemon really does seem to be the odd man out in the Nikon line-
up. The D5000 is far better. Did Nikon have some CCDs left over and
had to use them up? Seems like the D40/40x got much better reviews
and they came before the D3000.

The D5000 is considerably more expensive.

No, the D3000 is certainly not "a piece of junk." I recently added one to my
Nikon collection and I love it.

The D3000 is just the latest member of the D40/D40X/D60 family, essentially
a replacement for the original D40 which had grown a bit long in the tooth.
Anyone who liked the D40 should love the D3000 since it's a better camera in
every way. Higher resolution, much improved AF arrangement, a number of
other detail improvements, and the kit lens is even better than the original
18-55 and is now VR.
