From: Andy Desborough on
I get the same 800 error when trying to VPN from a client inside the LAN (I
can get to with Logmein)

Sorry, contrary to what I said earlier I CAN RWW internally/remotely but
when I login to RWW as administrator I get no 'connect to server desktop' in
the list of options that are normally there. I can see the mapped drives,
shares, email etc. I guess I'll have to dig around in the event log and run
the wizards when I'm down there tomorrow to investigate a bit more.

Thanks for your help, Russ.

Regards,
Andy.

95% of my clients I've never visited onsite.
Just RDC to the server and make your fixes :)

From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on
Just a guess, and it may not work, but it can't hurt.

If you can RWW to the RWW landing page and logon to RWW as Administrator,
can you then logon to anything inside the LAN?

From the TS or a desktop, issue the following command:

shutdown /t 2 /m \\sbsserver /r

That should shutdown and restart the SBS. Restarts have been known to repair
many issues in SBS.

From: Andy Desborough on
Problem solved :)

I found today that when buttoning the server it took an awful long time to
logon at 'applying computer settings'. Eventually the desktop came up and it
appeared a bit sluggish, CEICW wizard hang after trying to run etc. The
server couldn't access the internet via a browser but I could ping sites and
Exchange was working fine.

When I Googled the applying computer settings bit I found several references
to a problem with APC Powerchute and Java updates and although they were from
2005 onwards sure enough one of the APC services was stuck on 'starting' and
the Performance Logs and alerts service was hung on 'stopping'. I killed the
APC services in Task Manager, uninstalled the Powerchite software as
suggested and the server was back to normal; the AV software updated
(wouldn't previously) and I could then RDP/VPN/Logmein to it externally.
Various posts suggested upgrading APC to V7 but the server was already
running V7 so need to do a bit more research on that, or as the battery's
almost defunct I may replace with a different manufacturers.

Very odd behaviour but got to the bottom of it, thanks for your help :)
Andy.
