I missed the beginning of this thread, but I'm assuming that ntpdate is
running regularly and you don't know why. If I'm wrong, just ignore me.
If I'm right, then you could just uninstall ntpdate and switch to ntpd.

So .. I got rid of ntpdate altogether, installed the ntp daemon instead. I
still get the error messages, now with /usr/sbin/ntpdate does not exist (of
course). So I still need to find the original cron script!

write a script, place it at /usr/sbin/ntpdate, to reveal the parent
process, and
all the way back to the problematic cron job.

use /proc/$PID/exe to locate the executable path.
