From: Glen Labah on 10 May 2010 00:39 I have a relative that has a PowerBook 1400 running OS 8.6 that does pretty much everything she needs, so there really isn't any particular reason to upgrade the thing. Except, over the past few weeks, she's gotten a few things that she would like to print out. She happened to have an old HP Deskwriter C lying around, and that has the old-style Mac serial connector on it. I was able to find extensions for the printer for OS 8.6 (the original install disks are for 7.5) but the computer does not appear to communicate completely with the printer. The 1440 only has one serial connector in the back, but the chooser makes you select between the modem port and the printer port, which is not how PowerBooks of that era were built. Or should I just upgrade the whole mess and get a new printer for her? Maybe something along the lines of an old Powerbook G4 that would run a fair amount of new stuff, and not be too big a transition? If so, any suggestions for a reasonably priced, but still decent quality printer? -- Please note this e-mail address is a pit of spam due to e-mail address harvesters on Usenet. It's one or the other, should not take a lot of effort to try them both. I seem to remember that the port is a printer port, if you wanted a modem, you used a PCMCIA (card slot) one. Somewhere I still have some 1400s, I plan to pass on to a more loving home, which a vareity of external interfaces, such as a modem, modem/ethernet combo and 802.11b wifi. > Or should I just upgrade the whole mess and get a new printer for her? > Maybe something along the lines of an old Powerbook G4 that would run a > fair amount of new stuff, and not be too big a transition? There are plenty of printers around, the choice would depend upon if you choose Leopard or Tiger. You can also get cheaply ($50-$100) a combination unit with color printer, scanner and if you want it fax. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
