I think the Solaris manual page for the sound driver (/dev/audio) had
the comment that "cat /dev/random /dev/audio" may be noisy

I always liked that understatement.

Reading /dev/audio won't produce noise, so one presumes that
was "cat /dev/random >/dev/audio"?
