I haven't really been paying attention, but I saw a thread
that said Bean is better than Text Edit. Which is true.

But Open Office is better than Bean, and it's by Sun.

I don't know anything about Bean, but Text Edit is that thing that opens
things that don't matter much than I have very little use for. Open
Office opens some things my Mac stumbles over, so it IS useful.

If you like OOo, I suggest NeoOffice. It _is_ OOo, but more Mac-ified in
some very useful ways.

Better depends, more usually than most words, on what quite is
meant. If you want complex and heavy duty but are prepared to
accept slower and clunkier, yes. Not if you want simple and
quick. It is unreasonable to compare a fast small run about car
with a truck.

Nicely put! In recent year, I have occasionally used it to write
out detailed invoices. By the way, there is Tex-Edit Plus, this
one is shareware.
