Yes, but I understand that most modern motorcars are fitted with
batteries these days.

That was the usual solution in the late 20th century, i had an unlocked
Motorola M3788 myself. (dualband version of 1800MHz C520)
In those days Virgin PAYG sim weren't disconnected for disuse,
and most other PAYG sims weren't disconnected for at least a year.

Since then a growing priority of networks is to harvest disused numbers

These days the first priority has to be to find a sim that costs nothing
to keep activated and isn't disconnected by the network for disuse.
That means only zero per month contracts qualify, of which i know of
only three:

1. Three Zero contract.
2. Orange OVP Virgin (ringfenced but old ones can be transferred)
3. Virgin PAYG with Direct Debit added (if still available?)
