From: Berkeley Brett on 22 Apr 2010 23:14 I'm very glad to see that Blender makes this list (no. 102): http://docs.google.com/View?id=ddckdtcz_1djc7hjfg I find it bewildering that Blender and Sketchup (no. 109) are so often omitted from lists of the best freeware. Why is this? Are they thought to be too specialized? (snip) Thanks for posting the link. However, the page has a display error in Firefox in that the categories overlay that black rectangle at the bottom named "View Slideshow". Also, PC Magazine includes far too many web services in their lists. Web services aren't freeware IMO. Screw the "cloud". -- John Corliss BS206. I block as many posts from anonymous remailers (like x-privat.org for eg.) as possible due to forgeries posted through them. No ad, CD, commercial, cripple, demo, nag, share, spy, time-limited, trial or web wares OR warez for me, please. Adobe Flash sucks, DivX rules.
From: Berkeley Brett on 21 Apr 2010 07:53 Hi John: Thanks for pointing this out. I see that snarl at the bottom. I just focused on the category lists, and as near as I can tell, they seem to work. I compared them with the 2009 category list at PWH: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2009/2009pl.category.php (I know there always seems to be some controversy about this list and the folks who compile it, but I've never understood what the controversy is -- seems to be a worthwhile list to me.) Also interesting to compare it with their cumulative list from 2000-2008: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2008/CumulativePL.php Clicking the "PL2008" category header to sort the list with 2008 titles at the top, I see that only a few programs have made the list every year between 2000 and 2008 (such as "the Gimp," "Eraser," and "IrfanView"). I'm running FFx 3.6.3 and the page is pretty funkeh especially around the slideshow box. > Also, PC Magazine includes far too many web services in their lists. Web > services aren't freeware IMO. Screw the "cloud". Hit the "print" reformatting function and the page becomes quite legible, btw. Yup, "services" are all the rage. thanks Brett, -Craig (across the bay on the Peninsula)

I've always hated lists that span multiple web pages so I put the whole list in one text file here: http://docs.google.com/View?id=ddckdtcz_1djc7hjfg Dave -- Registered Linux user # 444770 |
