I've used it for splitting for ages, can't get it to work these days
though, even by following the tip about java prefs.app. There were some
other suggestions I found online that I haven't dared try yet since they
look a little scary.

Same here, I run Snow Leopard on an Intel mini but old Leopard on a G5
Tower. It worked on the G5 for ages but recently stopped - maybe after a
software update but I can't be sure.
