From: Mel on 9 Dec 2009 16:39 FWIW, I've been using Google Groups for years and have been happy with it for the most part. (I followed it over from when it was Deja-news and Google improved it a lot.) I mainly like the ability to search. But I liked the immediacy of postings with seeing the Usenet group directly with a browser such as Outlook express. So, I used one for searching and the other for reading and posting. But now that AT&T dropped newshosting <boo!!!>, I can't get it directly. I'll have to pay a third party provider such as GigaNews if I want to do that (or dump AT&T). Anyone with suggestions for a good newsgroup provider? <g> -Melina On Dec 9, 8:22 am, Dale Fye <dale....(a)nospam.com> wrote: > Steve, > > I recognize that the web app is not the preferred method for viewing the > microsoft news groups. As far as I know, the ISP I connect to the net through offers nothing in the way of newsgroups. I just connect directly to: msnews.microsoft.com That at least gets you into all of the MS newsgroups. And since that's where the messages are really hosted, you'll get less "latency" than by hitting a news host that replicates messages from here periodically. ============================== PPT Frequently Asked Questions http://www.pptfaq.com/ PPTools add-ins for PowerPoint http://www.pptools.com/

For NNTP server, I enter msnews.microsoft.com > FireFox and IE stand still when I enter the > address directly too. Clicking the link starts my web browser, which > does no good, of course. If the browser has a built-in newsreader (as Opera does, for example) you can enter news://msnews.microsoft.com and it'll get a list of groups from the server, let you choose which you want to read/subscribe to. Firefox and IE don't have newsreaders built in. If you have a client registered as the default newsreader (ie, news:// protocol handler) on your system, entering the full news://whatever URI will launch the newsreader. Just tried it in Firefox on a different computer, for example, and it pops OE up. Firefox seems to depend on the system defaults; IE lets you specify the newsreader (Tools, Internet Options, Programs, Newsgroups: (pick 'n choose). [Dang. Read your later msg. You've already got it sorted. Hate to see all this deathless (death-dealing?) prose go to waste so I'll leave it anyhow.] ============================== PPT Frequently Asked Questions http://www.pptfaq.com/ PPTools add-ins for PowerPoint http://www.pptools.com/ |
