Well it'll only use a gigabyte of RAM/swap (depends on your VM of course) but your machine was already using 2 gigs of swap so the extra gig took it over the edge. If you reboot you won't be using any swap, so the gig for the VM will be much less noticeable. Figure on rebooting more if you *really* want to run VMs with only 2 gigs of memory. What model MacBook is this? Are you /sure/ you can't upgrade its RAM? -- Chris

Thanks - I'll remember that. > What model MacBook is this? Are you /sure/ you can't upgrade its RAM? It's a C2D 2GHz bought in Sept 07 with a GMA 950. Stuart -- cut that out to reply

Crucial says max 1GB per slot but quick search says 2 x 2GB can be used although pre-Santa Rosa MBs only see 3.3GB - the 2GB sticks are quite pricey at around 40. I wonder if you'd get 3GB by adding a single 2GB stick. Stuart -- cut that out to reply

You do, and it's a big gain. There's a mild downside, using different size sticks you get a 3%ish lowering of memory access speed. Wildly offset by the gains due to having an extra gig, so not a reason to spend an extra 40 on a second 2gig stick. Cheers - Jaimie -- "Doesn't the futility of it all depress you, Bernard?" The AppleCare on this MB runs out in September and I'm eyeing a 15" MBP but really the current laptop is fine for most things I use it for. Perhaps a single 2GB and a new HD might satisfy my gadget craving. Stuart -- cut that out to reply
