How about trying another mail client? Thunderbird's got quite a good
setup Wizard that tests the server for suitable settings.

Or try uk.telecom.broadband the plusnet techs tend to lurk there and the
usual people on there are very knowledgeable too.

<snipped three very helpful suggestions>

Andy: It's helpful to know this coincides with the settings you use.
And I'll dig into any strange firewall settings etc.

David/Jim: Thanks for pointing me at the Plusnet usergroup. For some
reason I've been using the text.news.virginmedia.com usenet server
where this group doesn't show. *sigh*. Now I know there _is_ a group,
I'll certainly try posting there.

Woody: Thanks for the idea. I'll get him to try this tonight...

I'll post back with the results!

Many thanks,
Peter

You'll have to be connected to Plusnet's newsserver in order to see/post
to their groups. Or at least you used to.

What does the "connection doctor" say? Click on "show details", then
click "try again" or some such, then post output here.

Well, what a long afternoon.

We've tried the telnet approach and it certainly seems that the SMTP
server is accepting mail (ie the 'rcpt to:<...> line got a positive
response), but then things didn't go quite as expected. We sent
subject: and to: and short body text followed by <crlf>.<crlf> but
instead of the expected "250 Queued mail for delivery" message, we got
"250 x-plusnet-relay: " and a long string (message id?). Certainly, the
e-mail didn't get to the designated recipient.

We then made one last attempt at sending mail via Mail, which failed
with Connection Doctor saying "could not connect" to relay.plus.net.

Following advice from an Apple Tech note, we flushed the keychain
whereupon things went from bad to worse - the Mail account would no
longer retain a password for incoming mail.

It turns out my friend inherited the machine from a relative and said
relative may have been a bit heavy-handed when cleaning up the machine.

Long story short -we're going to do a complete re-install of Tiger from
scratch.

Give me a week or so and I'll let you know how it went...

Thanks for your help and support so far!

Peter
