I bet you're the sort of clever chap who could tell me how to find that out! :-)

My laptop would do something similar when on battery power with a battery which was old and failing. Booting uses a lot of CPU and hard disc resources with a correspondingly high power draw - the battery couldn't supply enough power and the machine would just switch off. A forced power off with this machine results in the sort of pop you describe. However, it wouldn't automatically try to boot again and usually wouldn't boot at all unless put on mains power. It sounds like you have a hardware problem; if you're seeing this when using a battery then it's possible that the battery is at fault, else the mains adapter may be failing. It may be something more serious, but at least you could try with a different battery or mains adapter to see if these cheap(ish!) components are indeed to blame or if the problem lies deeper. Since the problem doesn't seem to happen every time you switch on the machine, given your description, it's could be tricky to figure out. -- TTFN, Andrew Hodgkinson Find some electronic music at: Photos, wallpaper, software and more: http://pond.org.uk/music.html http://pond.org.uk/

Aside from the `user waiting for boot' delay, is there any reason for that?
