From: Sager on 14 Jun 2010 16:55 Like many of you, I have been grappling with unsuccessful .NET Framework updates. Hopefully, this post might help you. I am operating from Windows XP Home Edition SP3 - 32bit. What I did... From Control Panel - Add And Remove Programs, I removed .NET Framework 1.1 (it had SP1 on top) NOTE: Add and Remove Programs would NOT allow me to remove .NET 2.0 SP2 or 3.0 SP3. I DID NOT USE THE WINDOWS UNINSTALL CLEAN UP UTILITY. I attempted to uninstall .NET 3.5 SP1 and it allowed me to do so. The program asked if I wanted to Uninstall or Repair the program. I SELECTED REPAIR. Then, I downloaded and installed .NET Framework 1.1 successfully. Then downloaded .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 (on top) successfully. It APPEARS that there is a .dll in this package which controls any and all ..NET updates. (I'm sorry but I did not write this program name down - but you will see it upon installation.) The most gracious Guru's here will identify the file for you. (I mean that genuinely. :) I think my file might have become corrupted during a defragmentation or something. REBOOT! Anyway, on your attempt to download and install the latest updates, I suggest you begin with the oldest KB (i.e. KB982168) then move ahead. My troubles manifested themselves here and again failed on KB979906 and KB979909. DO THESE ONE AT A TIME. Note: Make sure that the 'Blue' bar at the top of your download screen remains BLUE! If it turns GREY, immediately click on it and make it blue again. There seems to be some problem with the install becoming 'suspended'. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! All the best! Good luck!

From: MagicBob on 15 Jun 2010 10:30 Just a personal observation. I use Windows XP SP3, and IE7. Sometime in the second half of last year there was an .Net update that wouldn't install. I went through the rigamarole of uninstalling all the various versions, and reinstalling the same versions in a certain order before the new .Net update would install. It took a half a day or more. Now somewhere in the middle of 2010, I am told I have to do it ALL OVER AGAIN! What is going on up there in the Puzzle Palace of Seattle? I have a computer to do something called "production". Maybe you computer nerds at Microsoft never heard of such a thing. I do not relish the thought of wasting another half day or more getting the .Net Framework to update. I only have one program that I know uses .Net Framework. Maybe I ought to do something else for that program and forget about .Net Framework. The .Net Framework system is too complex. Simplify it at least to the point that it will update on its own as advertised. Instead of having multiple versions of the thing, have one version that does it all. You do that with Windows! I grew up on MS Dos from 1988. I have a son that has been trying to get me to switch to Apple for 15 years. It is looking better and better everyday. As soon as you force me to upgrade to Windows 7, I just might do it. Thank you for letting me vent. From: Sager on 15 Jun 2010 17:41 Hi MagicBob. Man, do I feel your pain. I'm not certain that .NET Framework does anything for me. I figure they want me to download and install this stuff for my "protection"; so I do it. Through Windows 95, 98 and XP, I have experienced the agony and loss of over $5000 worth of Hardware and Software which has become obsolete. I chose Microsoft PC back in the day because there were so many programs available to run on it. I have indeed paid the price. I'm still not so sure that Apple is the fix-all for our troubles. But one thing is for certain, it's all about the money. The computer is an appliance... All I want to do is plug it in and have it work for me; like a microwave or a toaster. I bought a computer to make life easier. But life has become harder because I have to maintain this box more than I do my car! I resisted Vista and now I'm supposed to buy into Windows7 because it's supposed to be what Vista wasn't. Makes me think our problems with XP are induced. Now I'll have to build a new computer with Windows7; but I'll keep my XP machine long after Microsoft stops supporting it. So, yeah, I feel your pain. And keep your IE7!!! Forget updating to IE8. You'll be stuck with Windows Live Essentials and you won't be able to rid yourself of it. All the best! "MagicBob" wrote: > Just a personal observation. I use Windows XP SP3, and IE7.
