From: Norm on 15 Mar 2010 16:37 I recently upgraded from a Powerbook G4 15" 1.33GHz to a 15" MBP. Originally I was thinking about keeping the PB G4 for some types of travel but more so as a backup Mac. However given my MBP is on Snow Leopard (as well as Intel vs. PPC), I'm not sure if using the PB G4 as a backup makes any sense. Interested if others have crossed this bridge and what conclusions they reached. Thanks for any opinions. -- Norm

What I meant by backup was a machine to use if (no... when) my MBP crashes. Thanks. -- Norm

Get yourself an external HD instead. Just keep your old laptop (if you like) in case anything happens temporarily to the MB. You can always grab a few things off the external HD to carry on a while. -- dorayme

It depends on what apps you use on the newer Mac, and whether the same apps (and versions of apps) run on the G4. -- Tom "Tom" Harrington Independent Mac OS X developer since 2002 http://www.atomicbird.com/

I have seen the bridge, but I didn't cross it; in addition to 15" and 17" MB Pro's, I have a G4 PowerBook running Leopard. Removed the heavy-duty software such as Creative Suite and keep it for occasional surfing and answering e-mails from my living room chair. The 17" is connected to a 30" Cinema Display and I don't move it unless I'm traveling; the 15" I carry back and forth between my house and my zerbat'ry <http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/galaxy_far_far_away>.
