I asked OnyX to check my preferences and it reported:
/Users/johnhill/Library/Preferences/com.apple.xecurit.plist: Conversion
of string failed. The string is empty.
/Users/johnhill/Library/Preferences/com.apple.xecurity.plist: Conversion
of string failed. The string is empty.

The former was last modified on 1December 2008 (before I bought this
iMac) and the latter was last modified on 2 June 2009.

Does this matter, and if it does what should I do about it?

Disk Utility or for that matter any of a number of other utilities will
report on and if required repair permissions. I used to Run MacJanitor
with earlier versions of OS X but haven't bothered recently.
Dodgy permissions /can/ occasionally cause problems but - IME - not
often. If you're worried run Disk Utility.

Personal opinion - it sounds more like the developers of Onyx forgot to
(properly) deal with the possibility of empty strings, rather than there
being any actual problem with your system.

I thought that, then thought that possibly the string is empty *after*
conversion, which shows a different screwup.

Either way, I guess it's not going to be something that matters.

John, is the spelling right on "com.apple.xecurity.plist"? I don't
have one of those, but I do have a "com.apple.security.plist" which
refers to my keychain.

Yes, the entries are copied out of OnyX and pasted into MacSOUP, and
I've checked in the files in the appropriate folders.

Anyway, leave well alone seems to be the line to take.

John.
