here is the file I just made:

http://www.alienrat.co.uk/temp/pagelayout.pdf

my printer has options for how i want to duplex it, but not if you
wanted it as a 4 page book (for instance). If I wanted to do that I
would print as a5 PDFs and just split and reorganise the pages.

That is how I would do it, but your way looks better!

Cheap Impostor is the best I have found. Been using it for ages.
http://www.cheapimpostor.com/

It imposes A4 pages 2-up double sided reading for folding and cutting
and binding. It deals elegantly with creep and printer bounds and stuff
which most of the others don't.

The author, Dylan McNamee, is very responsive to bug reports and he's
funny too.

Righto. So the answer was, it doesn't impose the pages, you have to do
it manually.

FWIW, my HP LJ4100 can do booklet printing internally. However, I do
find the HP software is rather poo, and I prefer to manage the
imposition before it goes to printing.

I'll second this - worked well for me.
