Next: Migrate SBS 2003 to Standard 2008 (no Exchange)
From: Michael L. Wartman on 28 Apr 2010 17:26 I am currently attempting my first SBS 2008 migration into an existing domain. I started by migrating the 2000 domain controller to a 2003 domain controller, demoting and removing the 2000 controller from the network and raising the functional level to 2003 native. i then ran the 2008 adprep utility on the 2003 standard dc, and attempted to migrate sbs 2008 as recommended in the migration documentation. the problem i am running into is this. when i reinstall the server and attempt to run the migration wizard, it cannot contact the domain controller. i have to install it as a new domain, then demote it and unjoin it from that domain, and join it to the existing domain. to my knowledge, at this point i cannot promote it to a domain controller. if i can please point me to instructions. however, to join it to the existing domain, i have to specify the WINS server in the network settings, and it works fine. before i specify the wins server, i cannot contact the domain to join up even as a member server. NETBIOS lookups in nslookup and nbtstat fails to work remotely, but will work fine from the 2003 desktop. FQDN will resolve without issues both locally and remotely. these issues are present on my workstation when VPN'd into the network. i can reverse lookup IP's to NETBIOS names, but cannot remotely resolve NETBIOS names to IP. any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
From: Cliff Galiher - MVP on 29 Apr 2010 00:21 Download and run the IT Health Scanner. You definitely have some network issues if the migration wizard cannot find the existing domain controller. -Cliff "Michael L. From: Chris Puckett [MSFT] on 29 Apr 2010 10:56 In addition to that (as I do not recall if the IT Health Scanner checks for this), make sure DCOM is enabled on the source: 1. On the source 2003 server, run the command "dcomcnfg". 2. Double click component services. 3. Double click Computers. 4. Right click on My Computer and go to Default Properties tab. 5. Please ensure that the box labeled "Enable Distributed COM on this computer" is checked. 6. If this box is unchecked, checking the box and reboot the source machine. -- Chris Puckett This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
