A cryptic subject heading I know, but I wasn't sure what the name for it
was...

My challenge:
I want to hack essentialPIM's categories and change them to something more
meaningful to me. Only the Pro version offers this capability.

However, I seem to recall many years ago, there were programs that would let
you open the executable of another program and edit any words you could find
within it. Thus, you were able to change certain button labels, etc of the
program to ones that you wanted and the program would still function. IIRC,
it was a bit of a hit or miss thing -- you had to make sure the new
description had the same number of letters and/or spaces as the old
description for example, otherwise the program might not work.

Sound familiar?

(Blushes...) Figured this out. Just open the language file in a text editor
and edit the names there.

Disregard my request...

In your OP you mentioned editing the executable. Don't use a *text* editor
for this task, unless you know it works save for /binary editing/. (Few
are.) Use a hex-editor (like FrHed or HxD) or even better a resource editor
(like the one from Angus Johnson) for such tasks. If after editing the
program complains, you may need to also adjust the PE checksum.
