To be fair, QuickTime did get a lot of criticism (perhaps not as much as
Finder) and it was well overdue an overhaul. Granted the player has lost
many features when compared with the "pro" version (which I never
considered worth buying) of the old one, but the library has improved in
SL, which benefits the whole system (Safari, Finder (Cover Flow), Quick
Look etc). Functionality missing from the new Player is available in
other apps, which also benefit from the improved library.

Yes I am disappointed that the player seems to have lost the ability to
play an ogg file, but if I don't need to watch it full screen I can just
use Quick Look, and if I do then I can install the old player (or
presumably some other app).

hopefully they put back everything they took out. it should never have
been released until it was done. they did the same with imovie.

I don't have SL to check that out, but I don't think that's the problem
here.

QT X (or whatever) _replaces_ QT 7.x in SL. And it sucks. QT 7 is a
pretty damned good player; I keep all sorts of players and decoders and
whatnot around, and while I use ffmpeg for obscure conversions, and
Streamclip for demuxing (and Mac the Ripper for, you know ...) I always
come back to QT 7 for basic exporting and certainly for playing
anything. It's more robust in many ways than VLC, and it will be a shame
if Apple toss it out for whatever reasons.

i put the quicktime x player into a zip archive and set the quicktime 7
player to be the default. it seems to work like it should.

Following up to my own post here - it seems that my conclusion was not
quite correct. Although both Ogg Theora video files I downloaded
previously failed to play in the new QuickTime player I have since
downloaded another one which plays fine. And that is not all!

If I refer to one of the ones that did not play as bad.ogv and the new
one which plays fine as good.ogv then I observe the following:

With QuickTime Player 10 not running I double-click on good.ogv, the
player starts up, the control bar appears, I click the play icon, it
plays fine and I can fast forward/rewind, pause etc.

I then double-click on bad.ogv, a new window opens but hangs with a
"Loading Movie..." message. Now if I go back to the first window I can
no longer get good.ogv to play - it doesn't respond to the controls any
more.

If I then close both windows without quitting the Player and
double-click on good.ogv it too hangs with the "Loading Movie..."
message. If I quit the player and double-click on good.ogv it again
plays fine.

Clearly it is a bug that locks up the whole player, but one which is
only triggered by certain Ogg Theora files.

Any more thoughts on this (apart from just reverting to the old player)?
I suppose I should consider filing a bug report.
