From: David Webb on 10 Jun 2010 09:31 Strange, but I don't see how the removal of the My Computer desktop icon would have any effect on your programs. If you played with the Group Policy editor, maybe you disabled more than you should have. In your previous response you didn't state which procedure "did it" for you. Exactly what effect did you notice with the icons removed? -- Google is your friend..... From: Jerry on 11 Jun 2010 04:51 Windows XP is installed with SP3 then I updated IE to IE 8 and that was when I started seeing all those things on the my taskbar showing as on the desktop. I would not have noticed except I have desktop tool bar showing in the taskbar. I set it up this way for quick access to installed programs and other special information. To keep the desktop clean I have 6 folders setup with shortcuts to the programs and other information. The programs I know were effected were Roxio burn software, Paintshop Pro and any program that I wanted to save to a specific location. With My Computer turned off for the desktop, I was could only see the folders that were on the desktop and could not browse to any other place. Strange but true. IE 8 is what caused the issue and started my investigation. At any rate everything is working now and I can live with it. I have another computer with Windows 7 setup the same way and with Win 7 the issue does NOT occur. I guess this is because Win 7 comes with IE8 and does not have to installed. From: David Webb on 11 Jun 2010 05:54 Thanks for the feedback. I too had many problems and system quirks when running IE7 and IE8, so much that I reverted back to IE6 and now run Firefox 3 as my default browser. I only use IE when needed for accessing the Microsoft websites. Life is much simpler now. Glad to hear you got it all sorted out. -- Google is your friend.....
