I recently had a hard drive failure and had to replace it. I installed
Windows XP Pro which went without any difficulties. Then the fun began.
The first thing was getting updates; the critical updates installed easily.
At this time I made an Acronis Image just to be safe. When I went to
install software updates such as .net/frameworks things slowed down
considerably; none of the .net/frameworks wanted to install or were so slow
to install it was like pulling teeth. Even the latest Windows Media Play
was difficult to get installed. I have never had this problem before.

I then broke down and updated to IE8. That was fine except it added things
to my desktop I don't care to have such as:
Help Icon for the Language Bar
My Documents folder
My Computer
My Network Places

I can go to the desktop in Widows Explorer and delete these last 3 items,
but they come back immediately.

How do I get rid of these items from the desktop permanently?

Thank you.

These Desktop icons can be easily removed by deselecting them in the Display
Properties. Go to Control Panel > Display > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop
button.

Thanks for the reply David.

I looked at your instructions and did what you said.
My Documents folder
My Computer
My Network Places

All these the boxes are unchecked and I see the icons can be changed, but I
see no way to remove them from the desktop.

Try two things:

First, go back and see if you can toggle the settings on and off. To do so,
simply check all icons, click OK and then Apply. Then go back and uncheck all
icons, click on OK and then Apply.

If still no joy, run the Group Policy Editor as follows:

Click on Run, enter "gpedit.msc", w/o the quotes, then click on OK.

In the Group Policy window scroll down to Desktop, under User Configuration >
Administrative Templates.
Enable the three icons you want removed.
Close the Group Policy window.

Thank you David, that did it.
